I won't be talking about the WTC tragedy here. I don't believe this website's purpose is to remind you of the problems we have in real life. Plus, I don't like the idea that a manichean world war is likely to happen. Can't we remember the lessons of the previous century ?  Well, so I've been spending my whole week watching the TV news about the events, and now I'm trying to forget all of it. And, ironically, when I think of Kyodai, I can only see problems in front of my eyes. In this last week, I've still received quite a lot of e-mails about 3D problems in the game. Since most people who have the game running flawlessly don't have any reason to send me a mail, I end up believing everyone has problems... Which is not true, of course. But sometimes I wonder if I just shouldn't drop 3D and continue Kyodai with a completely 2D interface that would emulate as faithfully as possible the "2D" option of the current 3D interface and retain most, if not all of its options. I don't want to post a poll about this... But your opinions are welcome. I guess a 2D interface would take me a few weeks to fine-tune, and then I'd be able to completely concentrate on the game itself, the new mini-games, the options, etc. As opposed to the current 3D interface that sometimes leaves me wondering whether I should improve the animations, the video card compatibility or simply work on new options. The fact is, I love the current 3D interface. But I don't know what my users think. I believe most of you prefer the 3D version as well, but, for example, would you continue downloading the new (and still free) upgrades if I were to switch to a completely 2D interface...?  Is it me, or am I always asking myself the same questions...? Anyway, if you have a couple of minutes... Please send me your opinion on the subject !

Okay, I'm feeling better, so here's the latest news... I've fixed the laptop bug (it happened only on video cards that don't support 32-bit textures), and re-uploaded version 17.02 to my server. Although I'm not sure whether or not it's currently online on my official mirrors. Maybe in a couple of days at most...  What a week... Really... Worst of the year. Hopefully you're having more fun than me, playing the latest version ! Wink

The September 3 news item was never posted on September 3... Why ? LONG story... On September 3 (yup), I finish the new version, I post it on my private server, send the URL to Tucows, and wait for their answer. Nothing comes. After a while, I realize it's Labor Day in the USA. Oh boy, did I choose the right date for my new release... Okay, so I decide to wait for the following day to announce the new version. And guess what. In the late night, my PC crashes. Reboot : nothing. It refuses to start. I couldn't sleep all night then, because I'd tried to plug my development hard drive into my girlfriend's PC, and it didn't boot either. Was the thing dead ? It would mean two months of development lost forever (especially Kumika !)...  So the next day, I go to a PC vendor with my machine, and ask for a quick fix. They say they'll be able to help the next morning. Ouch. So I wait. And I'm just miserable for another day. Then I call them, and they say the motherboard is fried. Or maybe it's the processor (that expensive Athlon 1.2ghz). Okay, they don't have any in stock. Fantastic. So I decide to go to another vendor. They just have a Duron 800mhz for me. Ouch again. That one sucks. I buy it anyway. I go to the first vendor, they try the Duron, and tell me that firstly it doesn't work, and secondly it's obviously an used Duron, from how it looks. Okay, now I'm angry, I go back to the second vendor, and surprisingly he charges me back without asking too much. Then I go back to the first vendor. Finally they got hold of a motherboard and processor... But it's a Celeron 850, and it's expensive. Oh my God, not that.  So, guess what. I became crazy and I want to the shopping mall, and just bought a frelling new machine. I just couldn't take it anymore. It hurts the wallet, but it's worth it. Now I have a lot of new hardware (including an Athlon 1.4ghz, and if this one burns, I'll rename Kyodai Mahjongg to "The Mahjongg Game That Hates AMD"), as well as a lot of hardware I already have. (This one will go into my girlfriend's computer... Hu hu.)  So, basically, I'm back. I had to reconfigure a lot of things in my development system, but it works again now... And I'm quite unhappy to see that not only Tucows posted the file (okay, I'd ASKED them...), but 3DFiles and VoodooExtreme also got hold of the news. Ouchhhhh. I didn't want the file posted. It seems like the new version doesn't work on a handful of laptop computers (at least with a Trident video card). I have such a laptop computer and will try to run Kyodai on it. If I can reproduce the problem, I'll try to fix it for next week... But for now, I'm t-i-r-e-d... Incredibly exhausted. So I'm just going to bed, and I hope you'll forgive me for the problems... Because I had much worse problems on my own side. Thank you for listening.

New release: Kyodai Mahjongg 17.02
September 03, 2001, 00:00:00
  • [Language] Updated translations : Romanian, German (rules of Kumika rewritten by Marc Lesselberg... he's everywhere Wink).
  • [Language] Fixed Spanish translation so that the help files point correctly to the translated versions.
  • [Skin] Added yet another woody skin... Wood 3 may be the most realistic of them. Quite nice.
  • [Cool] Revamped the Themes feature for less confusion. Now, you can change their settings to your taste (and save them into a new theme), and "reset" the theme to its original state if you made a mistake. Additionally, I removed the "No themes" option (which had become pointless) and the game now uses the "Default" theme by... default.
  • [Cool] The Themes menu is now updated immediately to show new Themes created with the "Add to Themes" feature.
  • [Fix] Fixed a bug which caused the game selector to remain on the screen even when a game is automatically loaded at startup.
  • [Fix] Fixed a problem with using Jpg small tilesets inside themes.
  • [Fix] Fixed problems with the left frame's buttons on the Old Selector.
  • [Fix] Fixed minor issue with the Automatic save option.
  • [Fix] Updated the "Default" theme to use Desert.jpg, not Desert.bmp... (doh !)
  • [Fix] Fixed a potential bug in Slider similar to the one fixed for Kumika in v17.01.

Working, working ! Wink I'm making a few changes to Kyodai and will release, probably next week, a version 17.02 or something like that. Nothing special, but it will address a few issues reported by various users, especially in relation with the Themes feature. See you !

Three million visits on !!  Yeah, eh.  Party on !  (And whoever gets the 3-million visit mark, send me a screenshot, just for fun Wink)  Update : the 3.000.000 mark is supposedly won by Nancy Galvan (who sent a copy of the HTML file and not a screenshot Wink). Marc Lesselberg comes to a close second with 3.000.001 and this screenshot... Wink

Ouch ! Bug. Fixed. Clicks improved. New version. 17.01. Get it. Now.  (If you don't understand : a bug was found, I was able to fix it, and at the same time I made a small but cool improvement to Clicks, so I've changed the version number to 17.01 and the file is available for download...)  Oh, and yes. I forgot that : no, I don't plan to add Kumika to Kyodai 2D for now. Please don't e-mail me about it. I had enough of a hard time to implement it in v17.01, it would take me weeks to put it in this old version, which is, as I already said, provided only for compatibility with Windows NT and machines without a 3D card. Just play the game in 2D mode and the new animation adjustment method should do the rest to make the experience enjoyable for you.

New release: Kyodai Mahjongg 17.01
August 21, 2001, 00:00:00
  • [Language] Updated translations : Polish, Danish.
  • [Cool] Changed Click's gravity point from the left side of the board to its center.
  • [Fix] Fixed a bug which caused completed columns of tiles to be left on the screen in Kumika if the music was changing at the same time.
  • [Fix] Put back the Kyodai logo in the upper right corner of the screen. I wanted to fix a small issue with it, and ended up hiding it completely :o)
  • [Fix] Added the "Joker used" mention if you switch from a new-format tileset to an old-format tileset during a game of Kumika.
