Again two weeks after... Well, at least now it has become a habit so I don't have to apologize, especially because it's Christmas so I'm busy in real life and it's understandable... Wink  So I've got a new version for you, v15.42, which fixes a number of minor to major bugs in the layout editor, in online two-player mode and in the tile animations. Some of these bugs had been there for months, so I'm glad they're gone now.  From now on, I'll probably start working on a new major update, so don't except a new version before at least three to six weeks. My goal is to add some difficulty levels to the Solitaire game, and bend some rules for the other games. We'll see when it comes... Merry Christmas and Happy new year then ! Wink

New release: Kyodai Mahjongg 15.42

  • [Language] Updated translations : Serbian, Polish, Greek and German.
  • [Fix] Hidden status bar items now disappear correctly.
  • [Fix] Made the Layout Editor much faster in 3D mode. This was due to the architecture change in v15.21.
  • [Fix] Fixed a lot of little problems that occured in 2-player mode. Corrupted results in 2D mode, unexpected game over, etc... All fixed.
  • [Fix] Fixed another lot of little problems with the Layout Editor. Notably a problem that erased an innocent layout when editing another and clicking on "Save".
  • [Fix] Fixed a problem with the Memory game in Emboss mapping mode.
  • [Fix] Fixed the remaining problems with the tile-removal animations.

Hi ! Well, two weeks without a news post... Sorry about this, but I guess it's the result of working so hard on Kyodai for so long. I was just exhausted and needed a break. I was still online (except for the last couple of days, because I was watching the 26 episodes of Future Boy Conan which is still one of my favorite anime series), but I couldn't work on Kyodai. However, I did fix the problems that were in v15.21 and the result is v15.25, which is now available on my site. Well, that's all for now !

New release: Kyodai Mahjongg 15.25

  • [Language] Updated translations : Serbian, Polish and German.
  • [Cool] Added an option (Configuration menu) to enlarge the numerals and letters on the tile corners.
  • [Cool] Added an option (Startup Options) to enable directly the high-quality 3D stretching and high-resolution textures for 3D. Kyodai will then look much better on recent video cards (GeForce, TNT, G400, etc), but it may not work on some video cards, including those with limited video-ram, and several 3Dfx cards (including Banshee and Voodoo 3). If you encounter a crash, don't panic : just launch the "Reset Options" shortcut of Kyodai and disable this option.
  • [Cool] Made the loading sequence much faster when you have a lot of files (especially layouts) in the various subdirectories.
  • [Fix] Fixed a few problems with the tile-removal animations.
  • [Fix] Fixed a small bug that prevented the Small tileset from being changed.
  • [Fix] Various other fixes and improvements not worth to be detailed.

Kyodai 15.21 is online Smile It's been updated with 3D implementations of all 2D tile-removal animations, including speed settings, etc. I've had a hard time doing this in a few hours today, but I've extensively tested the options and it should work perfectly. I've also added a cool rotation effect to the animations. Have fun !

  • [Language] Updated translations : Polish and Slovenian.
  • [Cool] Even more performance improvements... On my video card, it represents a 10% jump in 16-bit mode and a 20% jump in 32-bit mode. Can I do even better now...?
  • [Cool] Added "Classic", "Nucleus", "Fuzzy" and "Union" tile-removal animations to the 3D mode. Oh, yes, that means all of the 2D animations... Smile
  • [Cool] Improved animation smoothness in Clicks.
  • [Fix] Switched back to the DirectX 6.1 engine, because of problems with older Voodoo cards. I decided to drop the Cube Mapping feature which was a DX7 specific. The performance should remain much higher than in v14.00 though, and most likely higher than v15.00 too (probably depends on your video card drivers).
  • [Fix] Fixed (again !) the crash problem with the Light version of Kyodai 14.00 and 15.00, due to a personal oversight. Sorry, this won't happen again !
  • [Fix] Fixed opaque particle problems on some video cards.
  • [Fix] Fixed board position problems when using oversized tilesets.
  • [Fix] Fixed deformed Background Cube walls on some video cards.

Hello. Back to work after a couple of days off... Smile  Well, the polls seem to clearly indicate a preference for the Quasi-Final version of Kyodai 15.21... Actually only 20% of you can't run it, so it's back to the usual results (20% represents the old and/or corrupted PC configurations that just can't launch a DirectX game without a chance to crash). Oh, by the way, I'm sorry to announce to the few users who want me to drop 3D : I had just put the option there to see the results, but I never planned to do that. Actually you should be thankful to 3D, because I realize now that I've never had more fun programming on Kyodai than since I switched to 3D. Actually, if not for 3D, I would have given up long ago.  Anyway. I'm planning to release the new version this week-end, hopefully. Maybe tomorrow, but I don't know if it will be possible. No later than within one week, though. I still need to fix a few glitches, and it will be ready. I guess that's what all of you wanted to hear, so that's the official announcement... Wink

Well, I've posted an update to the public beta. Same link as below. I've decided to base my work on the DirectX 6.1 version instead of the DirectX 7.0 one, mostly because of increased compatibility with older cards, and because I don't exactly need the DX7 features for now. If I ever require a version more recent than 6.1, I'll probably directly switch to DirectX 8.0... For those of you who had visibility problems with the previous beta (Test #2), they're gone. Since I've reset the poll, please vote again to update your status ! I've also fixed all of the other bugs I've met. So, if you find any more bug, please report it to me, thanks ! (Also, I'm still waiting for your feedback about this beta...)

Only ten votes for the Beta 2 poll so far (in about 12 hours), and the "Alternative" version seems to get your choice. The problem is that, technically, I've spent the last three weeks hearing you tell me, "This version doesn't work ! Go back to Kyodai 14.00 !", which is basically what I did in the "Quasi-Final" version (went back to the DirectX 6.1 engine). I could go back to Kyodai 14 and then implement one by one all the features I've added in v15.00 and v15.21, but it would take weeks. I don't like the idea at all. So I believe another poll is needed. Please consider everything before you vote. If you're not sure, drop me a mail and tell me your opinion. As you all know, I'm always listening to my users' feedback to help improve Kyodai. It's just that, this time, I'm not sure what you all want. It's like if nobody agrees on what to do. This is making me lose my time, when I could be adding more features. I definitely want to add new rules to the games, a challenge mode to Solitaire, and so on... And I can't do anything before I'm sure I have the right engine. So please help me on this ! Wink

I give up on this performance issue with single-texturing. I tested the whole thing on my secondary PC, and it showed a jump from 45 fps to 60 fps between v14.00 and v15.21. As it should be. I've also noticed that the driver issue also appears on Windows 98. So it's not a Windows 2000 specific.  Now let's do something more interesting. I've finally uploaded a public beta version of Kyodai 15.21 ! It is *very* beta, in the sense that it's full of little glitches here and here. Nothing serious, but on one version it doesn't have the Emboss mapping, on another it doesn't have the Environment mapping, etc. Both versions should work for you, but I'd like you to test anyway. So, let's download kyo-beta.exe (2,2mb) first, launch it, install the program (preferably in a different directory), and try to launch the two executables provided. You can choose the "Reset Options" shortcut to be sure to launch them on a clean system. Then I'd like you to send me a report on whether these two versions work, whether or not you found any problems (NOT minor graphic problems... I'm talking about error messages or crashes here), and which of the versions are best for you. By the way, one of them uses DirectX 6.1, the other uses DirectX 7.0. I won't tell exactly, though Wink...  Now I'm eagerly waiting for your feedback ! Thanks ! If I get enough feedback as soon as possible, I may be able to launch the final (bug-free) version of Kyodai 15.21 this week.  PS : I've also added a poll about this, if you're too shy to send me an e-mail... Wink Although I'd love to get your personal thoughts, especially if you send me your performance tests (enable "Show Benchmark" in the 3D menu), more precisely comparisons between the Special Effects "None" and "Environment Mapping", especially if you own a NVidia video card... Wink
