It must be the season. After the GeForce 2 MX, I bought a laptop computer today. Actually I'd planned this for years, but I never could afford it. This time I saved enough money for it Smile And since my second PC broke down last week, I was somehow forced to buy a new machine -- so I chose a (relatively cheap) laptop. I'm very happy with it for now. Oh, by the way... I get about 40-50 fps in Kyodai with it. So, never consider that a laptop computer is not suited to play Kyodai in 3D. You just need the right video card in it Wink (in my case, a Trident Cyberblade chip...)  As for the fleas, hopefully they're dead by now Smile I guess using more and more products finally finished them off. Phew. But never say never. I know they may be back in a few weeks. I'll be watching.  Finally, back to Kyodai. I decided that it was time to move on to DirectX 7.0, just a couple of weeks before the official release of DirectX 8.0. I suppose that, by now, everybody has installed it and is happy with it. So Kyodai 14.42 will require DX7 and should offer (at least on GeForce cards) a nice speed improvement -- I don't know why, but now I get a framerate of about 116 instead of 96. Just by switch to the DX7 engine. Cool. Also, I've been working on implementing cubic environment mapping, a feature supported mostly by GeForce cards I think. And I'm pleased to announce that it works, and that it looks much better than Kyodai's current environment mapping feature Smile Strangely, it was easy to implement. But it took days to do, just because the feature is documented nowhere and I had to cope with just a couple of obscure C++ files and the DX7 documentation. But now everything's okay so never mind... At last, the new menu system is finished ! Well, no keyboard shortcuts yet but I'll probably add them externally (you won't have to see the menu to be able to call a shortcut). It took me several hours of hard work to implement the wide menus feature, and I nearly got mad at my computer for crashing so much, but now it works 100% perfectly. Now I'll try to focus on the status bar, toolbar and hall of fame. Also, I'm going to add a series of new layouts, a new background and a new tileset to the next version, which will probably be called, eheh, Kyodai 12.00 -- I think the new interface itself is enough of a reason to do a major upgrade. You may also get a new song from Miguel Samiez in the process ! Eheh, can't wait ? Wink

Hello. As you may have seen on the main page, version 11.42 is out. I hope you'll like it. It fixes a lot of the small problems introduced while switching to the DirectX engines. It also brings back the 2D and 3D animations in Rivers, Clicks and Slider. Plus, it has the help files translated to French, and a new tileset as well as a new background ^_^... What are you waiting for ? Wink  If you're waiting for the Original Soundtrack, well, it's not going to be on sale before next month at least. Sorry about that (if you want to complain, do it to Miguel, not to me ! Wink)... Oh, yes, the polls. I've removed two of them. The result was that 93-94% of you seem to appreciate the new design. I'm glad to hear that ! Also, the 2D engine poll seems to indicate that you prefer the new DirectX engine. That's why I'm trying to make sure it's more and more stable. I'm sorry for the lack of stability in 32-bit color mode, but it doesn't seem to be my fault. And finally, the "bonus" poll shows that you all prefer the Mahjongg Solitaire game (which seems obvious, since Kyodai is advertised as a Mahjongg Solitaire game), followed by Clicks and Rivers, then Hashira, Slider and Memory. Funny fact : it's exactly my preference order !  Well, I think that's all for tonight. I hope you'll enjoy the new version !

Okay, no new beta yet Wink... However, I've prepared a funny screenshot for you. It shows my latest work on Kyodai : Environment-mapped Bump-mapping Smile It looks so great ! Well, the screenshot shows a game that is rather unplayable, but I'm working on making easier-to-watch graphics for the final version. Implementing bump-mapping was much harder than expected (Microsoft, I hate you !), but I'm glad I did it. Don't worry, it will be optional, because it causes a severe performance hit, and it's only available on G400 cards. Apart from that, I've reimplemented the good old MCI routines for playing Midi music. As you may know, the DirectMusic engine doesn't correctly play the pitch-bend calls in Miguel's musics, and I was unable to find information on how to fix the problem. Expect a third (and final ?) beta version by the end of the month. The final version will still be late, yes. But it will be worth the wait.

The new Beta is finally online. Please read the "What's new" file to find out the known issues. The rest seems to run perfectly on my machine. I hope you'll like it. Please send a short report to tell me if the game's running fine on your machine, along with your video card type. Even if it works. Don't expect an answer, but I'll do my best to keep you posted about the future events. If everything goes well, the final version should be ready in a week or two, after I've selected the new graphics and layouts to add. Makes me think that I absolutely love those programs that explain the major version number change (v6.1 to v7.0, etc) by simply adding a background or two to the package Wink...  NB: DirectMusic is incorrectly supported in this beta version. Please answer "yes" when Kyodai asks you if you have a powerful machine, and only play MOD-type musics (not Miguel's musics). Otherwise you're likely to get an Access Violation. The bug will be fixed in the final version. Also, do not use the menus to switch between games. It causes some problems.
