Ten million days later...
November 08, 2005, 10:52:44
Hi there! This is the longest time I spent without posting on the main page, but I still managed to post two thousand messages this year on the registered users forum. It's grown into a damn fine community that I'm really proud of. The homepage received its 10-millionth visitor a few hours ago! That's a long way from our first million visits, in early 2000. So what's up about KMJ? Oooh, it's starting to smell like vaporware isn't it? Don't worry, I'm still working on it, now targeting a Christmas release for the next version, while v20.00 beta 3 was made available to registered users last summer.

Since then, I've mostly been working on the website itself, improving the forum, the design and the upload system. I've recently added support for (multiple) categories, which were much needed to allow for easier sorting of the hundreds of backgrounds, tilesets and layouts that have been uploaded so far. There's a lot yet to come. Maybe even a port of a certain software for a certain other kind of Windows operating system... Roll eyes

The rest of my time has been used up by a bit less geekiness and much, much more real life than usual. Things are looking good on this side and I'm glad to say that if I haven't been around here much lately, it's because I'm out there, busy with... happiness. But fear not, as I'm back in the saddle and ready to kick butt Smile

Wink

Website moving along nicely!
January 14, 2005, 04:28:35
After ten days of activity, the new kyodai.com website has been acclaimed by all of its members, who are now over 500 [as of January 15] and still growing.

New pages have appeared on the website, over 200 messages have been posted on the boards (a quarter of these being mine... Hu), we also offer 5 beautiful backgrounds and about 15 extra tilesets to download.

I'm still working on improving the website (I'm planning to work on it for several more months), but I'm slowly resuming work on the game in the meantime. Hopefully, a new beta version version should be available for registered users, that will allow a new form of communication between the game and its website.

The ultimate goal being, of course, to make the experience even more refreshing and enjoyable! Smile
Now, let's get back to work! Wink

Our New Year's gift to you!
January 03, 2005, 18:04:24
Happy new year everyone! And here it is, as promised: the new website! New design, new pages, 100% multilingual, discussion boards, categorized downloads and uploads, and more to come!

It took over nine months to gestate (Wink), and offers a lot of new features, mostly to registered users. It's not considered as "finished", and probably never will be, because I wanted to make a solid basis suitable for adding progressively more and more features.

Future versions of Kyodai Mahjongg will interface themselves with the website and be able to directly access exclusive downloads. In the end, we hope to create a strong community that will be able to share their passions here. Hopefully you can enjoy the website as much as we enjoyed making it!

Please bear with us as the website's last bugs are being chased away by the author! Wink

PS: there was an issue when the site was first put online, which lead us to go back to the previous version before we could fix it. It was a problem with the server's virtual host configuration. Thanks for your patience.

PS 2: another configuration issue prevented accounts to be created until now and e-mails to be sent to us. We apologize for the problem.

I'll be doing my best to open the website by Sunday, instead of next week. It will be January 2nd and I might finally have some time to work on it. Fingers crossed! Happy holidays everyone.

Programming a bulletin board system from scratch is something that can't be compared to anything else. It's not like it's a very hard task, on the contrary it's quite pleasant to develop new features every day (the only boring part would be to make sure everything can be translated to any language), but it's very long to implement. Every day I'm adding new code, and progressively it's looking a bit more like a "professional" forum system. It's still far from an Invision or phpBB module of course, but at least it's my code. It's very rewarding when you manage to emulate features from the best forum systems. Recently I added support for avatars, user information, and a feature that I'll develop further in the coming months, revolving around uploading files by yourself and having other people comment on them and rate them. The more I work on the website, the more I hope I'll be able to make a perfect interface between the software (KMJ) and the website. It's really going to be a fun place to be, and I don't want to make any mistakes while developing the online code. Again, please bear with me.  If you're interested in knowing what I'm doing apart from that... How does it feel to lose several days and knowing you'll never get them back? Now I know. I've been looking into hardware websites for months just to find the "perfect" new machine for me, making sure it'll have a RAID system to ensure maximum security for my hard drive data, etc. And guess what? One day I woke up, turned on my machine and had my hard drive litterally crash in front of me. I managed to retrieve most of my "work" data, having made a copy of it the week before, although I spent a day trying to rebuild the data before I realized I did make that copy. Yes, isn't that silly. Anyway, I got the website and software to work again, but I still lost about 3gb of miscellaneous data with the crash. Apart from the work data, I managed to repair about 1gb of lost data, but it took me several days, hence the feeling I really lost my time in a time where I really don't want to reschedule the release of the website. I still want to publish it before the new year. Really. And it'll be done. Maybe even before Christmas. Provided I don't get another hard drive crash in the meantime. Ever heard of the Murphy law? Wink Anyway, everything's fine now. The website is looking better every day, I'm sure most of you will appreciate the additions. And if you don't, well, I'll try to add an alternative version of the website that looks mostly like the current one. But I'm sure I won't have to ;o)
