And here they are... The new and improved Drivers 6043 have been leaked for Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Now you can experience Kyodai Mahjongg's Realistic Tiles option at over 100 FPS (120 FPS in 1024x768x32 using all options and the 16-bit texture mode) on a Radeon 8500 card. What did I say last time ? Oh, yes : enjoy !

Hi there. ATI (Radeon) stuff again. If you're running Windows 95/98/Me, you might be interested in having a look at Rage3D's website. They posted a link to a driver leak for your system. These drivers (9017) supposedly include the HPB (high-polygon bug) fix which used to slow down Kyodai Mahjongg. Windows XP and 2000 users will have to wait for another driver leak, though. Enjoy !

ATI kindly asked me not to give away the frames per second I get with their new drivers, so I've removed them. But I believe they will let me say that they're twice faster than the older drivers... Smile

For those wondering, the ATI drivers numbered 6.13.10.6043, which I mentioned in the last post, are not available to the public yet. They're for developers only. I'm sure they will be leaked soon enough, though. I made a few tests with other programs, and I don't think they boost performance for DirectX 8 programs. Maybe a little for DirectX 7 programs though (I haven't made enough tests to be sure). It's like if they had fixed the drivers especially for Kyodai Mahjongg, how nice of them ! Wink Only issue so far : a complete freeze (yes, it doesn't only happen to you ! Wink) when running an EMBM sample from the Microsoft DirectX 8 SDK. I always seem to have problems with Bump Mapping on my configuration. I guess next time I'll upgrade it, they'll be fixed, but I'll have other problems somewhere else... Wink  Update : I've removed the poll, it has been running for one month. Here are the results if you're interested. For a total of 2960 votes. 7% of you don't like versions 18.xx, 9% didn't try it, and the rest either liked it or loved it. 62% of you think it rocks, so I know you're all behind me, eheh, at least two thirds of you... Wink Thanks !

Some time ago, I posted a news item about ATI Radeon 8500 cards, and how I was disappointed by their performance when compared to GeForce3's. I knew it was a driver problem -- on the paper, ATI's card has better hardware than the GeForce. But I just couldn't understand how Kyodai Mahjongg, with Background Cube and Realistic Tiles enabled, could run twice slower than a normal GeForce3.  After I posted the message, I received comments from ATI fans and NVidia fans, and since I didn't want to start a war between the two sides (I like everybody, I'm cute :o)), I removed my comments from this page.  Well, today I want to discuss about it, because the problem is no more. I downloaded Beta Drivers 6043 for Windows XP, ran Kyodai Mahjongg, and it just looks magnificent, running twice faster than it used to. I'm really excited about how fast these drivers are ! Now I can't wait for the GeForce4, then the Radeon 9500, then the GeForce5, then the Radeon 10500... Oops, I'm a bit too fast myself now... Wink
