Title: New release: Kyodai Mahjongg 2006 1.0
Post by: Nao on January 07, 2006, 21:54:42
  • [Music] There's now a total of 25 minutes of CD-quality music in Kyodai Mahjongg! (See below for details)
  • [New] Implemented soft shadows (shadows with smoothed borders), at absolutely no CPU time cost.
  • [New] Platform mode now offers a more interesting view: transparent glass effect with full board reflection.
  • [New] The platform's frame now has rounded borders for a more realistic effect.
  • [New] The layout selector's layout preview window now shows different layers in fading colors, in order to look like kyodai.com's preview system.
  • [New] Now, on Solitaire and Rivers games, the time counter will only start after your first click. This is in order to encourage users to develop a strategy prior to removing tiles.
  • [New] The dialog box animations are now a little more noticeable.
  • [New] Added a new Contemplation mode (Slowest), enabled by default.
  • [New] Changed "Tileset" menu to "Tiles", moved "Small Tiles" menu to top level, and renamed "Small Tiles" to "Stones" for better clarity. Games that use "Stones" instead of "Tiles" are Clicks, Slider, Hashira and Kumika.
  • [New] Finally implemented Rivers tile removal animation the way I always envisioned it, with a line representing the link between the tiles.
  • [New] Updated program icon and installer to something more... modern. The installer now works in your default language, too.
  • [New] While I was at it, I replaced the toolbar icons with a new icon set, "Nuvola" by David Ignoni. Also used a couple of Windows XP icons for the Start menu group.
  • [New] You can enable and disable "Large icons" for the toolbar in the View > Toolbar type menu.
  • [New] The player's name is now set by default to your Windows account's name instead of "Player1".
  • [New] The layout selector now offers a Difficulty rating for every layout. This is only an estimation based on the free tiles/total tiles ratio, and won't work for all types of layouts.
  • [New] 3D engine converted to DirectX 8.1.

  • [Language] Updated translations : Italian, Norwegian. Added incomplete translation to Arabic by Awadh. Work in progress. I also updated the Japanese translation by myself, only for the main onscreen text.

  • [Skin] Added "Classic" skin, taken from the website's sidebar background used in early 2005.
  • [Skin] New default skin: "Smooth", a gradient maroon seamless tile made by the author, which renders nicely in the menu and window system.
  • [Tileset] Added the beautiful "Gargoyles" by 'Ren, which was omitted from v20.00 by mistake.

  • [Fix] Fixed support for complex character sets such as Arabic, Japanese, Greek, etc. Fixed 16 language files that didn't have the right charset.
  • [Fix] From now on, when changing the Direct3D device crashes the game (happens to me only in fullscreen mode), the program won't freeze, it just will quit immediately. Just restart the game and it should run fine again. If it doesn't, launch it using the "Reset options" shortcut.
  • [Fix] Fixed "Set Font" feature which didn't work any longer.
  • [Fix] Improved selection dialog box's layout.
  • [Fix] Fixed a bug in the Music menu when selecting a theme with no music attached.
  • [Fix] Texts in the help files are now anti-aliased when anti-aliasing is enabled on Windows.
  • [Fix] Improved down arrow key handling in Hashira.
  • [Fix] Fixed various glitches in the layout editor.
  • [Fix] Fixed "squeek" sound when starting a Clicks game.
  • [Fix] Fixed a showstopper in the layout editor when cancelling a "Save as" action.
  • [Fix] Fixed a problem with Ogg songs and the Random Music feature.
  • [Fix] Finally fixed that "Musics" subdirectory to be correctly spelled as "Music".
  • [Fix] Disabling the "Play in a window" option will no longer make the caption bar go away.
  • [Fix] Removed ability to add song files to themes, for esthetic reasons. Just use the Music menu to switch between songs...
  • [Fix] Fixed another of these long-lived bugs: Hashira tiles getting stuck in the frame when the computer is too slow.
  • [Fix] Follow-up to v19.75's Random Music issue: figured out an undocumented way to include MOD songs in the Random Music process.
  • [Fix] Particle animation disabled for Ghost animation type, for Feng Shui reasons or something like that.
  • [Fix] Fixed interoperability between the "Show Numerals and Letters" and "Large Numeral and Letters" options.
  • [Fix] Fixed a bug from v20.00 public beta 1 where the program would sometime crash at startup with a "JPEG error #42" message.
  • [Fix] Added an entry in the troubleshooting guide about the "Set Volume" feature not working on some configurations.
  • [Fix] It's not so important, but now the hall of fame file (Hallfame.ini) will only record the actual best scores instead of dozens of empty rows for each and every layout.
  • [Fix] Fixed a vertex list unlocking bug that may have been the cause of ingame crashes on some video cards.
  • [Fix] Removed "Rotate" option from the Contemplation Mode menu to clean up some code (I don't believe anyone ever used it anyway).
  • [Fix] The English and French help files have been fully revised. Hopefully you won't find any obsolete information in them.
  • [Fix] As always, lots and lots of other little things...

  • [Music] Added a great new CD-quality OGG song: Emerald, by my friend Miguel Samiez, taken from his album Bluescape Limited bonus CD. Sweet dreams!
  • [Music] [Only in the full download of KMJ] Added another OGG song: Fusion, by Miguel Samiez. It's a mix between Endless, Fairy Tale and The Sad Song, taken straight from the Kyodai Mahjongg soundtrack album.
  • [Music] [Only in the full download of KMJ] Added another OGG song: We are like Crystal, by Miguel Samiez. A very moving song with a melody you'll never forget. Taken from the Bluescape album.
  • [Music] [Only in the full download of KMJ] Added another OGG song: Rain Dust, by Miguel Samiez, in its short version. One of Miguel's finest earlier KMJ works, now in CD quality. Taken from the Bluescape Limited bonus CD.
  • [Music] [Only in the full download of KMJ] Added another OGG song: Ice Palace, by Miguel Samiez.
  • [Music] "Congo Nights" comes back to KMJ after years of absence.

Is it just my imagination or are the fireworks really better in the released version?

I did not initially see that your latest work of art was on the home page.  I got so used to just going right over to the community forum pages.

Outstanding Nao.  If anyone was wondering why it too so long to release this lastest version all the have to do is see all that you have fixed, improved on, and added.

Now rest easy: for your latest and greatest is out.  Maybe you should take your lady on a nice vacation and not even think of KMJ for awhile.  You sure are more than deserving of that.

dmaggard I guess I must have been imagining it also.  The fireworks seem more intense.  Or maybe it is just the power of suggestion as I did not load and play until after I read your post.

I compared it to beta 3 and there really is no difference,  Maybe it's that I have yet to copy my old Hall of Fame to the new, empty Hall of Fame that came with the new release, and hence I am seeing the fireworks after every game.

Actually the Hall of fame gets automatically copied from your KMJ directory to your KMJ 2006 directory... Provided of course both directories are in "Program Files".

Just wanted to say a couple of things Nao...

1.  Absolutely fantastic!!! :-D
2.  Absolutely fantastic!!! -- did I already mention that part? :-p
3.  I love Congo Nights (why was that ever taken out?) and thank you very much for putting it back! It reminds me of Jean Michel Jarre's work... :app:
4.  All the OGG songs are top notch as well -- "We are like crystal" is simply superb and "Fusion" is indeed the perfect default song. 8-)
5.  ALL of the old bugs are GONE!  I am truly in awe... :-o
6.  Found a NEW bug.  But you do deserve a break so I won't tell you about it until you're ready... :-)

Webangel> Thanks ;) I'm not calling for votes any longer, though. I do not appreciate how I never received my trophy for the second award I got, and how they handled the whole thing when I asked about it. My best award is still the audience award, the only one that matters: 10 million visits to kyodai.com!

1. Thanks!
2. I know
3. I removed it because someone told me long ago that it was a ripoff from Skaven's works. I listened to the work in question sometime later, and realized it wasn't true. But I always forgot to include the song back into KMJ, now it is done.
4. Yeah :)
5. Did my best :)
6. You're welcome to tell. As long as it's not a showstopper, I won't even be upset ;) (There's a private forum thread for beta testing stuff, please post it there!)

I just want to say as always how impressed I am.

And like most everyone else, I found a couple things, but NO BUGS...

The new icon is cool, but I still like the old one better, but to each his own.

And since I import my own Mp3's I also noticed that the Musics directory became just Music - no longer plural, I found that because when I first put it on in the same directory, my Mp3's appeared to disappear, but when I checked the directory structure I saw the old musics directory, moved my Mp3's to Music and voila' all is well.

Anything Rene' does has always impressed me, Congratulations on an awesome job as usual...

(The New Desktop Icon is even fine, I just got used to the "Old Green Tile")

So...what is up for version 1.1? (Ha, ha, only kidding, take a break Rene')

Yes.  When I was younger and weighed 40 lbs less than I do now, the effect was even more striking.  One guy working behind the counter in a coffee shop had to look twice before asking me "You aren't Bill Gates, are you?" :-p  That was back in my university days.  Maybe I'll try to land a job with Microsoft in the future... I wonder if my appearance would be an asset?  (More likely a liability! Hah! ;-))

I noticed, too, and I like it, Raveneye! :)

Thanks, Booster!  My brother got my wife and me a webcam for Christmas so I figured it was time to update my avatar. :-)

meerupps> Yes, I changed the directory name because "Musics" is a clear spelling mistake in English. In French we have the word "musique" which translates both to "music" and "song/tune". It does have a plural for both meanings (World music: musiques du monde, Nice tunes: jolies musiques). Anyway!

I'm sure you'll learn to appreciate the new icon.
If you don't, you can always change the icon back to what it used to be, I can post it here if you'd like.

Version 1.1 will have the music playlist manager, hopefully. It's #1 on my current to-do-list. I also have:
- applying realistic tiles to Stonesets (although it might be hard to implement--Stones and Tiles just aren't dealt with in the same way, internally. I will first have to change this.)
- putting the game selector together with the layout/graphics selector (that's just an idea.)
- fixing the bugs that will (hopefully not) be found in v1.0 ;)

Yes, I changed the directory name because "Musics" is a clear spelling mistake in English.

I just assumed it was a Britishism, like maths instead of math.

D/L'd Kyodai last night. Absolutely the finest!! The color, shading, and overall feel of the game is outstanding. Without a doubt this is the finest game available. If you haven't, try it. If you haven't, buy it. It will bring you countless hours of relaxtion and enjoyment.

Thank you very much. You have outdone yourself.

I'm sorry if I offended you, Ant5, but I really don't understand your point. There are plenty of Americanisms, and Canadianisms and Australianisms and Irishisms and Yiddishisms, etc., etc., as well as Britishisms.  It is its diversity and its willingness to incorporate new elements which has made the English language so robust.

You know, Nao, any impression you may have to the contrary not withstanding, if you came over here, your French accent would be a tremendous asset, both in terms of employment and in terms of making the ladies swoon.

And by the way, about a quarter of the English language is a "silly" Frenchism!!  ;-)

Not so much "exciting" as anyone could think, uh.
My written English is actually quite misleading. I'm SO much better at typing in English, than I am at speaking the words! I can't stand myself speaking anything else than French.
(My Japanese accent is not bad, still I fail miserably when I try to speak it.)

Your words, accent and looks are a true reflection of a true French romantic gentleman who can 'pull the wool' over any fair maiden especially if they are British!!  Us Britons love French accents.

Your written English is certainly excellent, Nao.  I'm sure you could master the spoke word if you were immersed in it.

I would agree with Dennis, Gilles.

When you gave us the spoken file to teach us how to pronounce Kyodai, I thought you did very well speaking in English.  Your voice inflection was a little off, but it was pretty darned close.  Who cares anyway?  You've never heard me attempt to speak French.  I dare say, you'd have a good laugh at my expense.  I'm trying hard to learn the language, but right now I struggle mightily with French grammar, especially conjugating verbs.

As for French and English accents, I love them both.  I'm fascinated when an English citizen comes here, and I get a chance to listen to them talk.    The French accent is a little harder for my ears because it's so much softer and smoother than our own language, but I love to listen to it.

Post by: Nao on January 09, 2006, 19:15:32
Well Dennis, maybe you can find out one day why it would crash thrice in a day and never again a few days later... There must have been some program running in the background to mess it up, I don't know.
I guess I'd be able to improve my accent if I was forced to speak English on a daily basis, sure, but I'd have to move to, let's say Australia, for this to happen :p

booster, all I can say is, a person's accent won't catch my attention if they're not speaking their native language. I prefer listening to people speaking in a language they're comfortable with ;)

LOL  The Aussies get teased here at times for their accent.  We have two very hot, very popular Aussies here right now, country music star Keith Urban and movie-starlet Nicole Kidman.  That they're dating has got Hollywood followers in an uproar.

Well, Gilles, you once joked about moving to the Caribbean islands.  Most of the folks on those islands speak English.  If you wanted the best of both worlds, you could go to one that's French-owned.  :)  I bet Milady wouldn't object to life in paradise.

Funny you plan to go to Martinique because I was going to mention it.  My friend's wife is from St. Maarten, which is a Dutch island.

When will you be going?  I envy you the time in the sun.  We've been under constant clouds for the past two weeks.  I need some warm weather, clear blue water, and lots of sunshine!  A virgin strawberry daiquiri would be icing on the cake.  :p

Edit:  Not funny about Minogue's cancer, but your comment.  Should clarify that.

Well the plan would be to go over there (with Milady) in late February, to enjoy the local carnival as well. But I'm not sure I'm willing to fly so many miles (I have ear problems every time I fly). Would be my first time to the American continent.
The weather is not too good either in France.

Dennis I wasn't offended, I was said what I said tongue in cheek and slightly sarcasticly, it is really difficult to write the appropriate inflection. :D

Reason for the reply is there was a sight implication that the abbreviation Maths came after Math.

Gilles, I remember a long time ago you said you were a bit of a homebody.  Now I understand why.  Getting bad earaches from flying is a bummer.  Isn't there something you can do to help it?  Would your doctor have any ideas?

Your weather forecast looks slightly warmer than ours and a bit sunnier.  I can handle the cold, even though it's not preferable.  It's the clouds that get me.  I need my sunshine!

Totally unintended!

The plural form did throw me the first time I ever saw it, but as I said in another post, it really does make sense once you think about it.

booster,
When I went to Australia and Thailand back in '01, it was the first time I boarded a plane. I caught a cold in Australia and had an ear infection. I didn't know I wasn't supposed to fly in that condition, and when I flew to Thailand, my right ear was severely wounded during the take-off phase. I went half-deaf for a whole week and had to go to the hospital in Bangkok several times to treat my ear. I managed to make it through to France without any problems, but since then my right ear has never been the same.
I used to be terrified with the idea of flying because of plane crashes. Now I'm only terrified because of what could happen to my ears. Silly, uh? Once bitten, twice shy. Or as we would say in France, chat échaudé craint l'eau froide.

Wow.  It's not silly at all, Gilles.  Can't say as I blame you one bit!  Once your hearing is damaged, you never gain it back.  That's a dear price to pay for taking a plane ride.

So what do you plan to do then?  Will you still try to go to Martinique?

I still haven't decided on that!
I'd rather go back to Naples, actually. It's a shorter trip and I absolutely loved the place. (Remember the Pompei pictures I posted here? ;))
I would love to show it around to my girlfriend.

I suppose going by ship is out of the question?

My dad spent the better part of 20 years in the U.S. Air Force but was deathly afraid of flying because early on a plane he was sitting in but got bumped off of just prior to takeoff by a higher ranking late arrival crashed in the English Channel, killing everyone.  Once he was in long enough to figure out how to work the system, he always managed to travel by ship instead.

I remember the pictures, Gilles.  It looked like a lovely place! :)

Going by ship had crossed my mind, too, Dennis.  But it takes longer and probably costs quite a bit more, doesn't it?

Raveneye, are you planning to tell us about the bug? ;)

Well, turns out its kind of unpredictable -- I changed a few settings and it vanished and now I can't seem to make it come back.  So its there but very hard to reproduce = I guess it's not really a problem! :-p

So you can kick back and relax, Nao.  No worries!

But what WAS the bug?

The stones (former small tiles) appeared to be partially greyed out in all the small tileset games, but only when the platform was turned off.  They were restored to full colour when the platform was reactivated.

Hmm that's strange... didn't make any important changes to the stoneset code.
I guess we'll have to see if this happens again!

Title: Re: New release: Kyodai Mahjongg 2006 1.0

It seemed to have something to do with the platform (or lack thereof) rather than the stonesets.

Maybe a z-buffer bug from your video card driver, with the cutting planes. It's not an often used technique.

Forgot to add something in the new feature list!

[New] The layout selector now offers a Difficulty rating for every layout. This is only an estimation based on the free tiles/total tiles ratio, and won't work for all types of layouts.

I edited the main post to add that. I also modified the help files that will come along with the next release.

I can't seem to find this.  Where exactly should I be looking?

dmaggard, are you sure you're using the right version?
I tried to uninstall and reinstall from the web, and I still get the new layout selector. AFAIK, the debug version is the same as well, only with the debug module enabled.

It says 2006 v1.0, both coming up and in About.

Windows properties shows:  2006.0.0.82

And it has the snazzy new icon.

Do you want me to send you a screenshot of the About display?

Wait a minute, Nao!  With all the crash reports you've gotten from me you know exactly what I'm running!  ;-)

Okay, Nao, I bit the bullet and downloaded the released build (2006.0.0.83); its layout slector is just as it should be. So this is simply a defect in the debug version and nothing you have to worry about.

Well that's strange, I thought my latest debug build was built AFTER the non-debug version ;)

Perhaps dmaggard did not download the latest debug version.  That is what I am using and it DOES have the difficulty designation.

I downloaded 20.0.0.82; surely that identifies it precisely to Nao. The released version is 20.0.0.83. If you got a debug version with a higher number -- and it sounds like such a version was built -- then it's no wonder it doesn't show the problem (which is moot in any event since it doesn't affect the public release).

I'm sorry Dennis, but I just checked: the released version is build 86 (2006.0.0.86), and the debug version is... build 87! You've been using older builds all that time. (Not that they're THAT old though... At most one day older. But I did change the layout selector on the last day!)

Yes, I was in error above when I said the reased build is 83; it is 86, of course.  My debug version, however, is definitely build 82, as you know from my crash reports, Nao.  Not that it really matters but do you have any idea how I got it?

I've removed the file because I just realized we're talking on a public thread here and this is a private file. It wasn't updated to the latest build anyway so it doesn't have the new stuff.

I'll probably remove access to these topics for non-registered users because I don't want to experience another thing like this, where a private file becomes public for several days.

Hello Sir.

The more I play KMJ, the more fun it becomes. Thank you for making
KMJ available to us.

I played KMJ v20.00 alot and have a high hall of fame listings. I want to start playing KMJ 2006 v1.0, but I don't want to start all over with my hall of fame listing. to transfer my listings to 2006 v1.0, is it only required to transfer the hallfame file over from v20.0 or is there more to it then that?

Thanks again.

John Sluce

Hi jjsluce.

You are correct.  Just copy the hallfame.ini file that you want to use into the Kyodai folder.
